- Lifeguard - Summer 2026
Description
Under general supervision, to supervise and direct the activities at park beaches and pools to ensure public health and safety; to perform rescues and administer emergency care and first aid; to act as an instructor for swimming lessons, water exercise and other aquatic instructional programs; to maintain lifeguard equipment and supplies; to clean deck and beach areas, vacuum the swimming pool and clean equipment; to maintain a clean and sanitary swimming environment; to maintain proper chemical levels and complete pool operation tasks; to perform general maintenance at a swimming facility; to work in a concession stand dispensing merchandise, handling cash and other customer-related activities; to staff park special events providing first aid, security and other necessary functions; to paint safety decals at outdoor pools; to assist Park's Horticulturists; and to assist with removal of snow from park walks and entrances. Performance of other duties may be assigned.
Requirements
Candidates must complete Milwaukee County Parks Lifeguard Training Program (three week session held January - May). Learn more about training at mkeswim.com.
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older at the time of hire. Candidates must successfully complete the Milwaukee County Lifeguard Physical Performance examination, obtain American Heart Association Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation for the Health Care Provider, and First Responder certification all through Milwaukee County.
Candidates will be evaluated and graded through the Physical Performance examination, which will consist of the following skills:
100 Meter swim - freestyle, completed in less than 1 minute, 45 seconds.
Surface dive and retrieval of a submerged object.
Front approach cross-chest carry.
Rear approach cross-chest carry.
Front approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
Rear approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
Double wrist grip and release to a cross-chest carry.
